Sombral Countermeasures
Cinnamon BunSombral Countermeasures are the survival principles governing encounters with sombrals, the Darkwoods’ second-tier monsters. Their danger lies less in a dramatic first attack than in the combination of stealth, endurance, and pursuit: they are blind, possess an extraordinary sense of smell, hunt in packs, and can track a target for days. The rule set turns Broccoli Bunch’s unexpectedly powerful Cleaning skill into an accidental defensive measure, while also establishing the limits of flight, concealment, and ordinary physical force.
Nature of the Threat
Arianne identifies sombrals, pixies, and dryads as the principal dangers native to the Darkwoods, distinguishing them from ghosts, which are comparatively uncommon and easily dispatched by most capable adventurers. Donat describes a sombral as resembling a wolf made of shadows. Sombrals are not necessarily as large as some wolves, but their shadowy bodies make them stealthier, and they do not need sleep. Their second-tier status marks them as a serious threat rather than an incidental wilderness creature.
The sombral’s senses create an unusual hunting profile. It cannot see, but its sense of smell is exceptionally acute. That apparent weakness therefore offers little protection to a traveler who can be detected by scent. Because sombrals hunt in packs, they can attempt to surround prey instead of relying on a single charge. Their ability to continue the pursuit for days means that a missed encounter is not necessarily an escaped encounter; once a target has been scented, distance alone does not end the danger.
Detection and the Countermeasure of Cleanliness
The first countermeasure is to reduce the scent by which a sombral would locate its prey. Broccoli Bunch realizes that his survival in the Darkwoods may not have been mere luck after Emeric points out that sombrals should have tracked him down. Broccoli attributes his avoidance to his Cleaning skill and concludes that being exceptionally clean leaves him with little smell for the monsters to follow.
This explanation connects the rules of sombral hunting to the unusual identity of Broccoli’s Cinnamon Bun class. The class describes him as a perfectly supportive, friendly figure whose purity is associated with nature and the cleansing of impurities. Broccoli initially finds that description smug and only partly accepts its characterization of him as naive, yet the practical system behind the class gives cleanliness a concrete survival value. His virtue is not merely a personality label: through Cleaning, it becomes a form of scent management that helps him pass unnoticed through a forest containing predators he never even realizes are nearby.
The same skill is presented as an active magical discipline rather than a cosmetic habit. Broccoli’s cleaning magic consumes mana and allows him to scrub a floor with a showerhead, mop, and bucket; later, he identifies Cleaning magic as especially useful against undead creatures. In the context of sombrals, this ability suggests why bodily and environmental cleanliness can matter tactically. The evidence establishes that Broccoli’s lack of scent helped him avoid detection, while also showing that the method is situational rather than a universal answer: it spared him from being found, but it did not give him a way to defeat a sombral once combat began.
Fighting, Retreating, and Choosing Ground
Sombrals dislike fireworks, making fire-based displays one recommended response. Light magic is considered the best countermeasure, although Donat notes that the group does not possess it. The preference for light follows directly from the monsters’ shadow-like nature, but the available advice remains practical rather than idealized: when the strongest tool is unavailable, physical force can still work.
A blow to the head is effective because sombrals are not incorporeal ghosts. They are vulnerable to physical attacks, though they resist such attacks better than ordinary creatures. This distinction prevents a common category error. A traveler cannot treat them as ghosts immune to weapons, but neither can a traveler assume that a simple strike will have normal effect. Physical combat is possible, yet it is an inferior and more dangerous solution compared with fire or light.
Running is not a reliable countermeasure in the Darkwoods. A traveler may flee temporarily to reach better terrain or a nearby town with many people, but sombrals cannot be outrun within the forest. Their scent-tracking allows them to maintain the pursuit, while pack tactics let them encircle the target. The correct objective is therefore not speed for its own sake but relocation: reach a defensible place, find populated shelter, or otherwise force the encounter onto ground more favorable than the open forest.
This rule also clarifies the contrast between Broccoli’s actual experience and the danger described by the expedition party. Broccoli has fought ghosts and some zombies and has encountered many pixies, but none of those experiences has exposed him to the Darkwoods’ most threatening native hunter. His clean condition may have prevented the encounter altogether, leaving him to interpret his continued survival as ordinary good fortune until the others explain the predator he unknowingly avoided.
Broccoli’s Later Use of the Principle
The countermeasures help define Broccoli’s broader combat identity even when the immediate discussion concerns his past survival. When asked how he fights, moves, and contributes to a team, he admits that he does not fight especially well, identifies Makeshift Weapon Proficiency as one of his abilities, and presents Cleaning magic as useful against undead and similar enemies. He also relies heavily on Jumping for movement and hopes to serve as ranged damage in a team.
That self-description reveals both the strength and limitation of his sombral defense. Broccoli is not framed as a dedicated hunter trained to pursue and kill shadow predators. His advantages are indirect: cleanliness can prevent scent-based detection, movement skills can help him reach better ground, and magic can offer a safer distance or a specialized answer where ordinary weapons are unreliable. His approach is therefore built around support, positioning, and problem-solving rather than dominance in close combat.
Rules and Narrative Significance
Sombral Countermeasures establish a compact wilderness doctrine: remain difficult to scent, prefer fire or light, remember that physical attacks can work but are resisted, and never mistake forest speed for escape. The rules give the Darkwoods a specific ecology instead of reducing its danger to a generic monster encounter. Ghosts, sombrals, pixies, and dryads occupy different positions in the local threat structure, and survival depends on recognizing the particular behavior of the creature involved.
The doctrine also creates an irony at the center of Broccoli’s early development. A class mocked for calling him pure provides the cleaning ability that helps conceal him from the forest’s most persistent predator. His survival is neither wholly deliberate nor wholly accidental: he does not know the rule when he benefits from it, but the rule later makes sense of what happened. Cleanliness becomes simultaneously a class identity, a magical skill, a bodily discipline, and a countermeasure against a monster that hunts by smell. That convergence is what makes the rule significant beyond tactical advice: it turns Broccoli’s apparently harmless defining trait into an unrecognized form of protection.
